How do you choose the best type of flooring for your living room? You want something comfortable for your family but durable to withstand plenty of wear and tear. You also want a floor that looks great. Your family and guests probably spend more time in your living room than in any other room.

If maintenance were no issue, we would probably encourage everyone to choose carpet for their living rooms. Carpet is so warm and cozy. It invites people to come in, settle down, and get comfortable. Carpets take the chill out of the floor on cold mornings, give the kids a comfortable place to play, and feel great on bare feet. The deeper the pile, the cushier the experience. Today’s modern carpets can be pet friendly and hypoallergenic and perform better than carpets from the past.

Both solid and engineered wood flooring give a classic look to your home. It is considered higher-end than carpet, so it increases the value of your home. A neutral hardwood lets you change décor at will. Plus, you can add warmth and coziness by adding an area rug. Of course, hardwood floors are colder and more complex than carpet, so you may need a great pair of slippers!

Some people love tiles for the living room. Tile is exceptionally hardy, comes in various colors, and can help keep your home cool. They are also waterproof. We highly recommend them if you have an outdoor pool or hot tub and people track water through your living room to come in to use the bathroom.

One of our newest favorites is luxury vinyl plank. LVP can mimic the look of other flooring favorites. However, it is easy to clean, low-maintenance, and water-resistant and in some cases, waterproof! Plus, it is more affordable than many other flooring options. While it is still a hard flooring surface, it has a cushioned back. That makes it more forgiving on joints than tile and most hardwoods. Plus, LVP is resistant to damage that can mess up hardwood, like scratches from pet nails or kids.
