How to Get Stains Out of Your Carpet
As a homeowner, you make efforts to take care of your home. Accidents happen, however, and when a stain ruins the look of your carpet, you may not be prepared to invest in all-new flooring. SMART Carpet and Flooring is a retailer and installer serving New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Here, our experts tell you how to get stains out of carpet to keep your floors beautiful and maximize their lifespans.
Removing Stains From Carpet
Not all carpet stains require professional cleaning. In many cases, the unsightly mark may be removed with careful application of household materials. Simply follow these steps for DIY stain removal:
- If the spill is fresh, scoop and blot as much of it as possible using a clean cloth.
- Prepare the appropriate carpet cleaning solution. Pre-test it on an inconspicuous spot to ensure it will not damage or discolor your carpet.
- Apply the cleaning solution to the stain, working from its outside toward the center.
- Let the solution soak on the stain for at least five minutes.
- Blot with a clean cloth until no more stain transfers to the cloth.
- Rinse with cold water, then blot dry with a clean cloth.
- Use layers of paper towel to absorb any remaining moisture. You may weigh down paper towels with a non-staining object to let them sit overnight.
- Once dry, vacuum to restore your carpet’s proper texture.
Avoid rubbing or scrubbing at every stage of the stain removal process. This will force stain particles deeper into your carpet, making them harder to lift, and may also damage your carpet fibers. If the above steps are ineffective, do not resort to scrubbing or other methods. Instead, consider hiring a professional cleaner.
Carpet Cleaning Solutions By Stain Type
When lifting a stain, it’s important to use the right cleaning solution. Different types of stains react differently to various materials. Using the wrong product solution is ineffective and may even make the stain worse. For best results, apply the following mixtures to the stain using the steps mentioned above:

Invest in Stain-Resistant Flooring in NJ and PA
It can be difficult to completely remove stains from carpet. Many stains leave a residue that, though invisible, collects soil over time. This causes the spot to reappear. Several follow-up cleanings may be necessary to fully remove the stain. In addition, if your household is subject to frequent spills, it may become frustrating to keep your carpets looking nice.
If you grow tired of maintaining your carpets, it may be time to consider a replacement. SMART Carpet and Flooring offers stain-resistant flooring options from top brands. These products use materials that are less likely to absorb spills, making them more pet-friendly and resilient against staining. They’re great options for households with pets, small children, or anyone looking for long-lasting, beautiful carpets without the hassle of constant cleaning.
